Each box contains 3 foams.

Mechanical filtration is the term used to describe the removal of particle waste from the aquarium. This includes uneated food, dead plant matter, fish waste and surfactants such as dust.

Biological filtration is the term used to describe the essential bacteria that inhabit the foams and break down toxic ammonia and nitrite caused by fish waste, uneaten food and decaying plant and algae matter.

In your Interpet PF filter the filter foam provides the mechanical filtration and biological filtration.

When the filter foam becomes blocked, simply clean in warm water. They will need replacing when they become worn, do not spring back to their original shape after cleaning, or start to tear.
